1 Adjectives Recognizing and Working With Modifiers.

2 Adjective: What is It? Adjectives modify, strengthen, or describe NOUNS. Adjectives answer the questions: Which one? What kind of? How many about a NOUN. Example: That is a cool car. Cool describes car so “cool” is an ADJECTIVE. What kind of car? ….a “cool” car.

3 Look at this example: “My big cat ate three mice.” To find the adjective ask: Which cat? BIG cat. Cat is the NOUN. How many mice? THREE mice. Mice is the NOUN. BIG and THREE are adjectives.

4 Many times adjectives are preceded by articles like: A, An, and The. The best band is the Dibble band. “The” introduces the adjective “best” and “the” introduces the adjective Dibble. Remember, Dibble is an adjective because it modifies “band”,

5 The word that introduces an adjective is called a Determiner A, An, and The are determiners.

6 Let’s learn it as a formula: Look at it this way. Determiner + adjective + noun, or D A N

7 The Formula D A N D Adj Noun D I saw the black clouds spin out a Adj Noun huge tornado.

8 The (article) = determiner Black = adjective (what kind of) Clouds = noun A (article) = determiner Huge = adjective (what kind of) Tornado = noun
