Lesson 6: Generators

 MUST understand how generators produce electricity  SHOULD understand the need for fuel for electricity generation  COULD understand that power generation needs to conform to standards

 You need to be able to define the following:  Magnetic field  Generator  Electromagnet  Turbine

1)In power stations. 2)A generator has a magnet and coil of wire, one of which spins relative to the other. 3)Electromagnets can be much stronger than permanent magnets. 4)To provide energy to make turbines spin. 5)To provide more energy for more generators. 6)The electricity produced at any power station can be used anywhere, reliably and safely.

Activity 1 (Low demand) 1)By spinning the generator more quickly. 2)By spinning the generator more quickly. 3)Depending on the generator – may be the coil or the magnet. Activity 2 (Standard demand) 1)Coal, biomass, gas. 2)The electromagnet in the middle spins and is surrounded by stationary copper bars in which the current flows. 3)More is used when a larger voltage is produced.
