2 Session objectives By the end session, CPs should be able to: 1) Define the term human resource management 2) Discuss effective strategies for managing human resources in schools 3) identify some challenges of managing human resource, discuss possible interventions.

3 Activity 1 What do you understand by the phrase ‘managing human resources’?

4 Managing Human Resources Use of [staff] in such a way that the school leader obtains the greatest possible benefit from the staff’s abilities and the staff obtain both material and psychological rewards from their work (Graham & Bennett, 1998).

5 Activity 2 G1.Which human resources do you manage as a school leader? G2.Which management styles are used by head teachers to manage human resources in their schools? G4&3.In your group, discuss some of the strategies you engage in to manage the human resources in your school G5&6.What are some of the challenges you encounter in managing people in the school? How do you resolve them?

9 Management of People Style of managing people is vital Most head teachers believe in consultation / participative style Styles of management in schools vary: Autocratic, Laissez faire, Democratic, Contingency etc.

13 Important Effective and efficient management of staff / human resource in school leads to achievement of successful teaching and learning outcomes It is through effective management of people that organizational goals / objectives can be successfully achieved
