2 1825-1899  Born in Vienna, Austria  Father was a famous composer  Wrote his 1 st waltz at 6  Dad refused to give him lessons because he thought because he thought “Schani” would become better than he was and better than he was and more famous. more famous.  Was called the “King of the Waltz” “King of the Waltz”

3 What is a Waltz?  One-Two-Three! One-Two-Three!  Waltz comes from the word ”volvere” in Latin which means to turn Latin which means to turn  Strauss Sr. was known as the “Father of the Waltz” and Strauss Jr. was the “Waltz King”  The waltz is still very popular today

4 “ The Beautiful Blue Danube”  You are listening to the “Blue Danube”  The most popular waltz in the world  Named for the famous river in Vienna in 1867  First performed by a male chorus and then male chorus and then later for the Strauss later for the Strauss Orchestra Orchestra  Made up of 5 waltzes

5 “New Pizzicato-Polka”  You are now listening to “Pizzicato-Polka” by Strauss  Polka is a lively peasant tune in 2/4  Strings instruments are plucked instead bowed  Strauss wanted to prove that he could do more than just write waltzes
