Photosynthesis and Respiration Chapters 8-9

Chapter 8 Vocabulary and Notes Make a heading in your notebook for Chapter 8 and define the terms below: – ATP – Photosynthesis – Pigments – Chlorophyll

What is Photosynthesis? Photo = “Light” Synthesis = “To put together” Photosynthesis = “Putting together with light” Q: What is being put together in photosynthesis? Q: Where does photosynthesis occur?

The Formula: MEMORIZE THIS! light pigments 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O ------------------  C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2

THE CHALLENGE: Q: How do plants manage this in different environments? Today, you will be working with a team of 4 to build different “leaves” that can best survive and successfully photosynthesize in different environments.

What plant parts do you have?

Waxy Cuticle Used by plants to protect their leaves and keep them from losing water in heat or harsh light or gaining too much water in wet climates

Leaf Epidermal Cells Green tight-knit cells that allow light through but don’t contain very many chloroplasts

Stomata Openings on the leaves to let gases like CO 2, O 2 and H 2 O vapor pass through

Pigments Chloroplasts: Organelles containing the green pigment chlorophyll. These are the primary pigments used by plants for photosynthesis Accessory Pigments: Used when chlorophyll is not available (fall, deep ocean, etc) – Carotenoids: Orange and Yellow pigments – Anthocyanins: Red and Purple pigments

Veins Veins contain the vascular tissue (xylem and phloem) that can carry water and sugars to the plants. Water travels up from the roots and sugars travel down from the leaves.

Labels you need: CO2 Water Sunlight Glucose Oxygen

Plant Challenges: Extreme Dry Heat (Desert) Tropical Rainforest Water Lilly Deciduous forest in Autumn Deciduous forest in Spring Shallow Ocean Deep Ocean

Sunlight reaches the leaf and energizes chlorophyll CO 2 enters through the stoma Upper Epidermis Vein Names: __________________________________ Class Period: _________________

Glucose (C 6 H 12 O 6 ) and Oxygen (O 2 ) are made in the chloroplasts from CO 2 and water O 2 is released through stoma Chloroplast Stoma Water (H 2 O) enters the leaf through the stem and veins from the roots. Inside the leaf
