Common Causes of Accidents n Falling n Inhaling n Electrical Contact n Exposure to Heat or Cold n Striking Against n Getting Hit n Getting Caught in n Exposure to Fire

Safe Work Environments n Clean work area n Tools would be clean n Color coded safety zones n All equipment safety guards installed n Equipment and power tools properly grounded

Safe Work Environment n Equipment regularly serviced n Environmentally safe n Organized n Safety conscious workers

Importance of Color Coding n Alerts everyone of specific dangers n Identifies acceptable traffic lanes n Allows everyone to find safety equipment easily

Safety Colors n Red - associated with danger and emergencies n Orange - associated with machine hazards n Yellow - identifies parts on machines that knobs control or adjust the machine n Blue - used for signs of warning

Color Code n Green - indicates safety equipment n White - used to mark traffic area n Gray - used on floors of work areas

General Shop Safety Rules n Do not use a power tool until you understand it thoroughly and it has been demonstrated by the instructor. n Use guards on power tools n Always keep fingers away from the moving cutting edges n Keep the floor around the work area clean

General Laboratory Safety Rules n Make all adjustments with the power off and the tool at a dead stop n Always wear approved eye protection n Do not run in the agriculture laboratory n Never talk to or interrupt anyone while he or she is using a power tool n Never leave a power tool until it has stopped completely

General Laboratory Safety Rules n Report strange noise or faulty operation to your instructor n Observe and follow safety color coded areas and signs n Do not use hand tools with damaged handles n Get permission from your instructor prior to operating a power tool
