California State Board of Education Son Elliot & Diabetes: my passion for NGSS P 12

California State Board of Education Elliot today thanks to advances in biotech 13
14
California State Board of Education CA’s process for NGSS adoption Attended NGSS workshop 2011 Followed the development of the standards and CA’s input thru 4/13 Attended six days of SEP meetings 5/13 Did my own homework & research Led on motion for SBE to adopt 14
15
California State Board of Education CA’s NGSS adoptions Sept & Nov 2013 In September: the NGSS K-12 as the new Science Content Standards for CA, and the NGSS Appendices A-M. In November: the CA Integrated Model for Grades 6-8 as the SBE’s “preferred model.” Also authorized a single 6-8 discipline focused model to be developed by the SEP as an LEA “alternate option”. 15
16
California State Board of Education Why is Integrated Preferred? More aligned with and supportive of the conceptual shifts in NGSS: the three dimensional learning of dissciplinary core ideas, cross cutting concepts and science/engineering practices. Consistent with how science is taught through 8 th grade in all the highest performing countries in science (PISA, TIMMS); CA low ranking in NAEP SBE/CDE has high confidence in the deliberations & recommendation of Integrated by CA’s Science Expert Panel. This model will be in body of CA’s new science framework 16
17
California State Board of Education What is status of Discipline Model? SBE authorized its development to be done by SEP and aligned with same model in Achieve. Options for this model were posted on CDE; the field chose to keep the disciplines at same grade as now. This model will be in the appendix of the new CA science Framework 17
18
California State Board of Education Pros & Cons of Two Models Discipline SpecificTeacher Content Expertise Teacher Passion Integration NGSS vision for science, not taught in silos Implementation of Crosscutting Concepts Articulated Learning progression with Life/Earth/Physical with Engineering at each year SEP recommendation. Also now adopted by the states of WA and OR. According to CTC, will cause very few credential issues. 18
19
California State Board of Education NGSS work going on now? CA NGSS K-8 Early Implementation Initiative with 8 districts & 2 CMOs CA Curriculum Framework Committee meets thru Feb 2015 then out for public comment CDE NGSS State Systems Plan reviewed by SBE at November 2014 meeting Discussions underway on next science test Discussions underway on changes to the state accountability system – “may” be a move away from single indicator (API) to dashboard of multiple performance measures 19
20
California State Board of Education Let me be clear I’m a SBE champion for bringing Science Education back as a core subject in K-12 Also beginning to work on options for expanding K-12 student access to computer science education. Both are critical to the education of all our students, and to the CA workforce. Thanks for the important work you do! 20
