CHM 101/102 Laboratory Manual Stoichiometry: Loss of CO 2 Purpose Purpose To apply the concept of limiting reactant to determine the stoichiometry of a reaction using the method of continuous variation. Safety Considerations Safety Considerations You will be using 3 M H 2 SO 4 (sulfuric acid) in this experiment. This can cause severe chemical burns to your skin and burn holes in your clothes. Wipe up any spilled H 2 SO 4 immediately with wet paper towels. All reagents used in this experiment can be safely poured down the drain. Flush with plenty of water.

CHM 101/102 Laboratory Manual Stoichiometry: Loss of CO 2 Procedure Procedure Your instructor will assign you a set of trials to perform. For each trial, weigh the appropriate amount of Na 2 CO 3 into a pre- weighed, clean, dry flask. Measure out approximately 2.68 g of H 2 SO 4 in a small, dry beaker. Na 2 CO 3 (s) + H 2 SO 4 (aq) Na 2 SO 4 (aq) + H 2 O ( l ) + CO 2 (g) Pour all of the H 2 SO 4 into the flask containing the Na 2 CO 3. After 3 minutes, weigh the flask again to determine the mass of the CO 2 (g) evolved.
