1 Finishing your clay project

2 Set-up  Get your piece from the kiln room  Examine it  Does it have any rough areas or small bumps?  Get some sand paper and sand it away  Wipe it down with a damp sponge  Make sure the sponge is clean!!!  Figure out how you want to finish it

3 underglaze Paint-like Colors can be mixed Colored slip Can be used on fired or unfired clay 3 coats!!!! Must cover with clear glaze when it’s fired Glaze Liquid glass Color out of the bottle is not the color it will be once fired DO NOT MIX colors 3 coats Don’t glaze the bottom Use only on fired clay (bisque) Acrylic paint Can be mixed 1 coat of paint Top coat of mod podge Paint will NOT come out of clothes – be careful! Use only on fired clay Batiking Oil pastel on clay with an acrylic wash Wipe away all paint Some will stick to the clay, creating an antique-y look Cover in mod podge Use only on fired clay Different finishes

4 Helpful tips Paper resist Cut your desired shape out of scrap paper Glaze the area you want to use the paper in in the color you want it 3 coats! While it’s still wet, lay your cut out on it One more coat on top Using a damp sponge, GENTLY wipe away the glaze from around the outside of the shape Glaze the rest of your piece Peel away the paper to reveal the color underneath Filling dark areas first If you have a texture, you can fill it in with a darker glaze Wipe it away with a damp sponge It will stay in the grooves, but it won’t be on the smooth part Glaze the rest with your lighter color You can paint right over the grooves – it usually won’t go in to the grooves Wax resist Use wax (liquid wax or a crayon) to draw a design on your piece Glaze over the wax – the glaze should not stick to the wax. If is does, the wax is not thick enough With a dry wash cloth, wipe any extra glaze off of the wax part
