Soil and Water The earth’s surface is made up of approximately 75% water. Most of the water is not suitable for drinking. Only Fresh water (potable) can be consumed by humans. In most cases the food chain is considered to begin with water.

Soil and Water Why is Land Erosion such a problem? –With many inches of rain per year the top layer of soil will be lost.

Soil and Water Ways to help prevent soil erosion –Keep soil covered with plants. –Mulch uncovered soil. –Conservation tillage. –Contour practices. –Rotate crops

Soil and Water Vocabulary Terms 1. Contour- on the level. 2. Delta- Soil deposited by water. 3. Evaporation- Changing from a liquid to a gas. 4. Fertility- Amount and type of nutrients. 5. Irrigation- supplemental water. 6. No-till- without the plowing or disking. 7. Port- Town with a harbor.

Soil and Water Vocabulary Terms 8. Precipitation- rain, sleet, snow or hail. 9. Purify- removal of foreign material. 10. Water table- Top of saturated soil.
