Basic Home Network Troubleshooting Guide Introduction The following constitutes but a single lesson of the basic home network troubleshooting guide which will introduce you to the three hardware components needed in order to establish a home network: the Network Interface Card, Modem and Router. Target Audience This lesson is targeted towards the end user with little to no background in the field or its terminology. Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this lesson you will be able to name and describe the function of the three hardware components responsible for your home network operations Duration The lesson offers approximately 30 minutes worth of material. Unit 1: Defining the Components Introduction Unit 1 provides the definitions and visual aids of the three components responsible for basic home network operations. Unit Objectives Define Network Interface Card Define Modem Define Router Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this unit you will be able to name and provide a brief definition of the three components responsible for basic home network operations. Unit 1: Defining the Components Objective Define the term Network Interface Card Network Interface Card A Network Interface Card (NIC) is a hardware component that is generally found inside the computer case. It’s rear panel layout, visible in the back of the computer case, indicates one of the two types of connections available: The standard 10/100 Base Ethernet socket indicates a wired connection, requiring an Ethernet cable connecting the Network Interface Card to the modem The modern antenna socket indicates the possibility of an added wireless connection Unit 1: Structure Unit 1: Modem5 A Network Interface Card requiring a wire A Network Interface Card with wireless capability Rear panel Antenna socket Glossary HelpExitMenu Image of the back of a Network Interface Card Image of a wireless Network Interface Card 10/100 Base Ethernet socket

Unit 1: Defining the Components Objective Define the term modem Modem A modem is a network device that is separate from the computer case. It’s rear sockets indicate the type of internet connection used in a home: ADSL Internet connection Cable Internet connection The presence of the Internet status light on the front of the device generally indicates the use of a modem and helps to differentiate it from a router as the latter does not usually display the internet connection status because it is not directly connected to the internet. Unit 1: Network Interface Card Unit 1: Router 6 Glossary HelpExitMenu Cable Internet Connection socket (COAX socket) ADSL Internet connection socket Some modems also share internet with home devices like laptops wirelessly through an antenna Image of the back of a cable modem

Unit 1: Defining the Components Objective Define the term router Router A router is a network device that is also separate from the computer case and connects to both the modem and the Network Interface card of a device wanting to join the home network. Unlike a modem, the router isn’t the device receiving internet through a direct connection and therefore has no internet status light. Unit 1: Summary Objective Summary So far, we have identified the three components responsible for basic home network operations: Network Interface Card, modem and router. The network interface card is a hardware component found inside the computer and has the potential to act wirelessly. The modem is a network device separate from the computer whose rear sockets help to determine the type of internet connection used in a home The router is another network device separate from the computer that connects to both the modem and the Network Interface card of a device wanting to join the home network. Unit 2: Identifying the Role of Each Component Introduction Unit 2 describes the purpose of the components responsible for basic home network operations identified in Unit 1. Unit Objectives Identifying the role of the Network Interface Card Identifying the role of the Modem Identifying the role of the Router Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this unit you will be able to describe the role of the three components responsible for basic home network operations. Unit 1: Assessment Unit 2: Network Interface Card 10 Glossary HelpExitMenu Image of Network Interface Card Image of a router (front)
11
Unit 2: Identifying the role of each component Objective Describe the role of a Network Interface Card Network Interface Card The role of the Network Interface Card (NIC) is to allow communication between devices on a network (e.g. computers, laptops, gaming system, printers) to generate. It is specifically constructed to recognise when a communication is trying to take place and allows it to happen through an in-depth system of internal protocols. Unit 2: Structure Unit 2: Modem11 Glossary HelpExitMenu A Network Interface Card requiring a wire A Network Interface Card with wireless capability Rear panel Antenna socket Image of the back of a Network Interface Card Image of a wireless Network Interface Card 10/100 Base Ethernet socket
12
Unit 2: Identifying the role of each component Objective Describe the role of the modem Modem The modem is most commonly known to receive and modify analog signals for encoding and decoding digital information. One example of a received analog signal is the one from your internet service provider (ISP), allowing you to use the internet. The modem receives its name from its role in modulation and demodulation of the received analog signals. Unit 2: Network Interface Card Unit 2: Router 12 Glossary HelpExitMenu Cable Internet Connection socket (COAX socket) ADSL Internet connection socket Some modems also share internet with home devices like laptops wirelessly through an antenna Image of the back of a cable modem
13
Unit 2: Identifying the role of each component Objective Describe the role of the router Router A router is a network device that is most commonly known to analyse incoming digital information and forward it to the Network Interface Cards of other devices on the network. This is done either through a wire, or wirelessly if the Network Interface card of the devices receiving the signal has that availability. Unit 2: Modem Unit 2: Summary13 Glossary HelpExitMenu Image of a router (front) Image of a router (back)
14
Unit 2: Summary Objective Summary We have now described the role of each component responsible for basic home network operations: Network Interface Card, modem and router. The network interface card is a hardware component found inside the computer that allows communication between devices on the network to occur. The modem is a network device separate from the computer responsible for the reception of the analog signal and the creation of the digital signal. The router, another network device separate from the computer, acts as an extension of the modem, forwarding the digital information it receives to other devices on the network. Unit 2: Router Unit 2: Assessment14 Glossary HelpExitMenu Image of Network Interface Card Image of a router (front)
15
Unit 2: Assessment Task: Associate the correct role description with the appropriate component. Input your answer in the pairs of squares. Unit 2: Summary Final Summary15 Glossary HelpExitMenu 1. Final Summary Objective Final summary Having completed Unit 1 and 2 of this lesson, you now have a better understanding of the names and roles of the three components responsible for basic home network operations: Network Interface Card, modem and router. Making it this far also means that you’ve successfully completed the assessments to which here are your results: Assessment 1: Number of correct answers: Number of incorrect answers: Assessment 2: Number of correct answers: Number of incorrect answers: Unit 2: Assessment Congratulations!16 Glossary HelpExitMenu Image of the components linked in order
