1 Installation Logistics Itzhak Tserruya HBD meeting BNL, July 6, 2006

2 Some thoughts on installation logistics (I) The preferable and only solution is to install first one HBD detector and a few weeks later the second one. First HBD: should be equipped with the existing GEMs in the DB (42 standard + 16 Au plated). All of them (with the exception of 1 standard GEM) have been shipped to SB together with 15 meshes. The quantity is large enough to play the gain uniformity optimization game. tip: do the optimization for 5 panels i.e. 10 detector modules and start installing from top, the last 2 modules at the lowest panel are totally outside the acceptance. target installation date: July 31 st ? August 7? August 14? SB and BNL Instrumentation should coordinate and decide on the target date. Will need a simple gas system for flushing at installation time. Conflict with the upgrade of the gas system?

3 Some thoughts on installation logistics (II) Second HBD: Time table for the second HBD is more uncertain. The next supply of GEMs (10 standard + 7 Au plated) from CERN is expected in the week of July 17, so by the end of July we should have in the DB enough GEMs for the second detector but not enough spares for the gain “optimization” game. The last batch of 30 GEMs (20 standard a+10 Au plated) is scheduled to be ready for shipment from CERN at the end of September. Rui is on vacations. Will negotiate with him an earlier supply once he returns to CERN on July 23. We may want to push the installation date of the second HBD as late as possible.
