What is Greenstone? Open source tool for building digital libraries Runs on Windows, Mac, and Unix/Linux systems and can be run from a web server Current version is 2.72 Version 3 is in development

On the Greenstone administration page select The Librarian Interface. On the next screen wait for password control to load and enter information Finally click on Launch Greenstone Librarian Interface http://locale.mannlib.cornell.edu/gsdl/cgi-bin/library

Notice that only Download, Gather, Enrich, and Create are active. You will work with me before you start adding materials to customize these tabs. This is the Greenstone Library Interface

In the Gather tab we will move materials from the home computer to the Greenstone Library. On the left you can see a list of all the files on your computer and on the right I have already created a couple of folders. To create a new folder click on the folder icon. To delete the file or a document click on the trash can. The Gather Tab:

Left click on the file name on the Workspace side and drag it to the appropriate folder on the Collection side. If you change your mind about what folder to add it to, just click and drag it to the appropriate folder. To add a document to the collection:

Greenstone allows you apply both folder and document level metadata. Metadata added at the folder level will appear in each document in the folder and cannot be edited at the document level. Metadata:

Notice that the subject heading “Bookmark” followed to the document. The library also collects all the values that you add to any document in the Existing Values box at the bottom of the screen. Clicking on any item adds it to the field. Adding metadata to the document:

After you have added all your documents and associated metadata click on the Create tab. If this is the first time you have worked on the collection, or if you made major changes, toggle Complete Rebuild, otherwise select Minimal Rebuild (it takes less time), then click on Build Collection. Creating the Collection:

Click OK on the pop-up box that appears when the build is complete. The screen now tells you how many files were loaded or rejected. The data above will tell you why a document wasn’t loaded. Build Complete:

To view the collection click Preview Collection. The collection will open in a new browser window. Viewing the Collection
