2. How can I find a book? How do I know which book is right for me? I don’t know

3. YOUR CHOICE  Reading on your own isn’t like reading for school!  You can pick something that’s all about your interests.

4. FICTION BOOKS  Fiction books like novels or short-story collections can transport you to another world!  Maybe you like the classics, or sci-fi, mystery novels, or ghost stories. Give historical fiction a chance.  Try a range of types of fiction and see what you prefer.

5. Nonfiction  Nonfiction books give you the who, what, when, and why of something.  They tell stories using facts—but that doesn’t mean they are dull.  Many nonfiction books read like novels from start to fiction.

6. Graphic Books  Maybe you want to try a “graphic book”, which can be either fact or fiction.  Usually written with text and images, similar to a comic.

7. “Blurbs”  The reviews and quotes on the back and inside covers of many books are called “blurbs.”  They give you an idea of what the book is about.  It can help you pick a book.

8. Family Favorite  What was your mom’s favorite book when she was your age?  Find out what books your family members liked to read and give it a try.

9. Five Finger Rule  Choose a book you think you will enjoy.  Read the second page.  Hold up a finger for each word you are not sure of, or do not know.  If there are five or more words you didn’t know, you should choose an easier book.
