Lithium Hydride Absorber Program Update Alan Bross

2 Alan Bross MICE CM - RAL November 6, 2009 We want to Procure:  An instrumented LiH disc (30 cm diameter, 4 cm thick) for measuring thermal properties  Two small (1.25” diameter X 0.25” thick) samples for radiation stability tests  One or Two LiH discs (50 cm diameter, 6.5 cm thick) u For use in MICE Step III.1 LiH Discs

3 Alan Bross MICE CM - RAL November 6, 2009 MICE Step III.1

4 Alan Bross MICE CM - RAL November 6, 2009  Y12 is producing the LiH  Produced by Hot Isostatic Pressing (150 o C, 30,000 psi) u Will use existing mold  Final parts will be u Tested for Chemical composition and purity u Radio-graphed to ensure no voids u Machined to size u Dimensional inspection u Coated with epoxy completely Y12 National Security Complex

6 Alan Bross MICE CM - RAL November 6, 2009 The Set Up of the Thermal Test Stainless steel base structure High temp glass ceramic High temp low k gasket 1” copper tube with heaters 12” dia steel ring Machined LiH disc Thermocouples X12 Foam board & gasket Flexible cooling tube

7 Alan Bross MICE CM - RAL November 6, 2009 The Set Up Ready for the Thermal Test

8 Alan Bross MICE CM - RAL November 6, 2009 The Hardware Ready to take the Disc

9 Alan Bross MICE CM - RAL November 6, 2009 The MICE Energy Absorber The absorber is fastened by two M8 screws and nuts first. Carbon-fiber Clamp Shells LiH Disc (~ 10 kg)

10 Alan Bross MICE CM - RAL November 6, 2009 Installation in MICE The absorber is lowered down through the slot of the ss spool piece

11 Alan Bross MICE CM - RAL November 6, 2009 Procurement  The PO has been in place since June u However, progress @ Y12 has been delayed  Current Schedule u Week of Thanksgiving (11/23) will “Press a Log” u Machine parts 11/30-12/14 u Apply Parylene coating s There is some risk here due to the death of an engineer in charge of re-commissioning the coating equipment u Final QC 1/18/10-2/1/10 u Ship to Fermilab by 2/15/10
