Students will read and demonstrate comprehension of a variety of nonfiction texts. Students will discuss social issues from non- fiction texts by justifying arguments with evidence from the text. Students will edit and revise a reflective response connected to a social issue.

2. WARM-UP: VOCABULARY Complete the sentences for 1-5. Study the words. Be prepared for Vocab 1-5 Formative. When you are done: IN BIN Silent Reading

3. LAST CLASS WE… Wrote a response to Dress Codes. Worked in groups to read a new article on a social issue. Worked on a graphic organizer for that article.

4. TODAY WE WILL… Complete the graphic organizer and review our argument thoroughly. Complete a class discussion on the arguments we discovered in our articles. Discuss arguments using evidence found in the text.

5. S - SOCIAL ISSUES GRAPHIC ORGANIZER (20) Complete the graphic organizer according to the article that you read on a social issue. Be diligent in annotating and recording quotes for strong pieces of evidence. The graphic organizer will be due by the end of next class if not completed today.

6. S – SOCIAL ISSUES FISHBOWL DISCUSSION (40) Students will read and discuss social issues from non-fiction texts. Q1: What social issues were read in these non-fiction articles? Q2: Are these social issues relevant? Why or why not? Q3: What primary arguments were discussed in these articles? Q4: What side of the argument do you stand on and why (use specific evidence)? Q5: Do any of our social issue arguments seem to relate or overlap with each other? Q6: What do you think of the other social issues classmates read about?

8. S – SOCIAL ISSUES RESPONSE (10) Students will edit and revise a reflective response connected to a social issue. Reflect on a social issue of your own choosing. It may be an issue that you have heard about during class, or it may be an issue that we haven’t discussed. Think about why this issue is important, what your stand is, and what people should do to get more involved (a call to action). Be sure to spell to the very best of your ability. Be sure to use correct grammar to the very best of your ability. (Capitalize pronouns! Punctuation! Sentence fragments!)
