1 Geographic Problem Solving: Crime Civics/Geography

2 Stinger The map to the left indicates the numbers of crimes taking place in different neighborhoods in Chicago. 1.What vocabulary do you need to know in order to understand the map? 2.What is the purpose of the map? 3.What information does the map provide? 4.Identify at least two patterns in the map. 5.Explain why those patterns might exist. 6.How can policy makers and concerned citizens use a map like this?

3 An Analysis of the map using our concepts  Hierarchy:  Would be nice to know the population density of these areas.  In general, violent crime occurs more often in more densely populated areas.  True of Wilmington?  Accessibility  Would be nice to have a street map laid over these neighborhoods so that we could test accessibility.  Violent crime often occurs in more accessible areas.  Arden story  Diffusion:  As shown in the map, crime often diffuses outwards from central points  Notice how neighborhoods next to red neighborhoods are orange or yellow.  True of Wilmington?  Complementarity  Relationships between neighborhoods or cities can cause conflict in one place to spill over to another place  Wilmington and Philadelphia?
