Big Question How do different cultures use gestures involving physical contact?

Specific Question How often are physical gestures, such as high fives and hugs, used between acquaintances at the high school level in Korea and in the United States?

Hypothesis The frequency of physical gestures of friendship among students in both schools will be similar; however, the types of the gestures will be different in the two schools.

Objective To find out whether culture affects the frequency and types of physical gestures among high school students in two different cultures. To make any possible connections to other aspects of culture

Procedure / Method pure observation without any manipulation of variables Setting: in the cafeterias of the two schools 10 minute intervals in 5 different locations recorded the types of physical contacts and frequency

Data Analysis The proportions of gestures observed to the total population were about the same for both samples (12% UHS,17% KIS) The types of gestures differed UHS had one more kind. Gestures in UHS were more intimate than those of KIS.

Potential Errors Some gestures might go uncounted Time of day KIS was done during lunch time, UHS was done at different times of day.
