Massachusetts: 2 Part-er! Mass. Bay: (Puritans) – Settled by: John Winthrop – Year: 1630 Plymouth: (Pilgrims) – Settled by: William Bradford – Year: 1620 Reasons: Religious freedom for Puritans “City Upon a Hill”: educate and change the world Reasons: Provide religious freedom for Pilgrims, economic opportunity. *Charter= Official permission by the government to found a new colony in the New World.

Remember Plymouth Colony? The first successful colony in New England Founded by Puritans – Puritans/Separatists were groups of people who did not agree with the Anglican Church in England. In 1620 the Pilgrims left England and settled in Plymouth. – Created Mayflower compact to agree to be governed by laws. – William Bradford- Was elected Governor 1621-1656 – The famous Thanksgiving of 1621

Pilgrims Pilgrimsvs.Puritans  Many of the Pilgrims were Separatists. – They wanted to separate from the Anglican Church. (Church of England) – By coming to the New World, they were escaping religious persecution and beginning a new settlement with their beliefs.  Puritans wanted to change the Anglican church from within.  They wanted to purify the Church of England from Catholic traditions.  They wanted a church that allowed members to experience God directly through prayer, faith, and study of the bible.  Came b/c of persecution. End up persecuting other religions.

Connecticut Settled by: Thomas Hooker Year: 1636 Reasons: Puritans breaking away from Massachusetts’ strict religious policy and political freedom – Hooker writes Fundamental Orders of Connecticut, first constitution in America!

New Hampshire Settled by: John Mason/settlers from Massachusetts Year: 1630 Reasons: economic opportunities.

Rhode Island Settled by: Roger Williams Year: 1630 Reasons: Religious freedom, religious tolerance! Political freedoms.

Challenges to Puritan Authority Anne Hutchinson—Claimed that God revealed to her that the people could read the Bible on their own and make their own interpretations. Was tried and banished as a heretic, traveling first to Rhode Island and then to New York where she and her family were later killed by natives. Roger Williams—Demanded clean break with the corrupt Church of England—Banished in 1636, built a Baptist Church and established complete freedom of religion in Rhode Island (even for Jews and Catholics) and complete manhood suffrage. He also believed that land should be purchased from the American Indians as it was not his to simply take.

Economic Development & Geography of New England NE had the most diverse economy in all regions – primarily focused on trade/industry: 1. Heavy reliance on the Atlantic Ocean: Shipbuilding, fishing, forestry 2. Good natural harbors *really rocky soil made growing crops difficult. 3. More urbanized w/ more professional workers (i.e. doctors, clergy, lawyers), think cities! 4. Little slavery due to economy and geography 5. Very religious-focused society w/ Bible/church as center of the community. Who are they going to encounter that will cause conflicts?
