4 Text Messaging What’s the definition of “Text Messaging”? “Spam!” “Communication!” “An addiction!” The traditional definition is “ A message that should include all 26 letters of the alphabet and 10 numerals to be sent or received”.

5 Text Messaging The history of Text Messaging: 1920- RCA Communications, also called Verizon Wireless, the first Text Messaging service introduced by New York. 300 thousand radiograms were transmitted in the first year. 1971-ALOHAnet, introduced by the University of Hawaii, allowed users to send alphanumeric messages. This action is called “Radiotelegraphy”. 1980- The pager was devised for short messages. A small display allowed the subscriber to see who was trying to contact them. A one- way numeric pager could only type in digital letters. However, by the time it got so popular, people started including texts by simply turning the “beeper” upside down. 1992- SMS messaging was used for the first time when Neil Papworth sent the message “Merry Christmas” via the Vodaphone network.
