Now, let ’ s go over a few things… Remember your seat! You need this class to graduate! Thus, none of you can afford to blow off this course. Attendance and effort are required. Remember, a D (passing) grade is a 65%!

Class Supplies Please have the following items every day: Pen/pencil Notebook A binder or folder specifically designated for Brit Lit materials A flash drive will be helpful.

Syllabus for British Literature, 5.0: Major Works: Beowulf - excerpts Canterbury Tales - excerpts Macbeth Brave New World Personal Narrative – College Essay Poetry –Sonnets, Pastorals, Ballads, Odes, Renaissance, etc. Short Stories –Lawrence – “ The Rocking-Horse Winner ”, Joyce – “ Araby ”, Mansfield – “ A Cup of Tea ”, Orwell – “ A Hanging ”, Vonnegut- “Harrison Bergeron Grammar review and direct writing instruction: 1 st semester – commas, apostrophes, Critical Paper – 3-4 pages, 2 critical sources, notes, MLA citations/Works Cited page Vocabulary – Units 1-7, quiz at end of each unit Required Summer Reading: Haddon - The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime OR Golding – Lord of the Flies

Classroom Rules/Expectations We need to maximize our time together and eliminate waste. All things that we do in this class are an attempt to sharpen our habits. I expect every student to work hard, and I promise to work hard as a teacher for you.
