For his contribution as a children's writer he was one of five finalists for the biennial, international Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2012. He and his father Sid Fleischman have both won the Newbery Medal from the American Library Association recognizing the year's "most distinguished contribution to American literature for children." David Frampton has been an illustrator for nearly 30 years and has been especially attracted to doing illustrations for children's books. His method of illustration is always color woodcut – simple, in his self imposed limit of four colors, but complex in the planning and execution of the narrative images.

16. Essay of the Month For the past couple of weeks you have been learning about expository nonfiction text through the eyes of an author. Over the next few weeks you will be researching and writing your own expository nonfiction text, your essay of the month.

17. Compare and Contrast You are writing a compare and contrast essay about two animals living in the same environment. What are your two animals?

18. Pre-research Before you go to the computer to do research, you need to have a plan. What questions are you hoping to answer during your research today?

Questions Today in your writing time you are to come up with three questions that you would like answered for each of your topics. – Examples: Black bears and Raccoons – Habitat » Where do black bears and raccoons live? » Do they hibernate? » Do the live in colonies or alone? » How long do the mothers stay with their babies?
