1 Aim: How do we provide enough detail for our paragraph for Question 27? Do Now: Which literary element or technique have you chosen to write about? Do you know the definition of it?

2 Questions 27 27. Choose a specific literary element (e.g., theme, characterization, structure, point of view, etc.) or literary technique (e.g., symbolism, irony, figurative language, etc.) used by one of the authors. Using specific details from either Passage I (the poem, “America”) or Passage II (the poem, “I, too”), in a well-developed paragraph, show how the author uses that element or technique to develop the passage.

3 Body Paragraph Topic Sentence – Introduce and Define Literary Element or Technique Provide Example – provide TWO specific examples from a single work Explain Example – Make sure you use the appropriate words for your element Connect – Explain how your element helps to develop the poem

4 Metaphor/Simile A comparison of two unrelated things NOTE: Similes use the words like or as to make the comparison Key word: compare, comparison EX: In the poem, “Harlem,” postponed dreams are compared to objects that are deteriorating. In the poem, “Harlem,” the poet creates a comparison between dreams that are deferred and objects that are slowly deteriorating because they too are left alone or put off.

5 Imagery Use of words to create mental images Key word: image, illustrate, paint, picture Ex: In Of Mice and Men, the author, John Steinbeck, uses imagery to illustrate the peace within nature without man. The images of the trees and small animals scurrying about paint an idyllic picture of nature. Those images are disturbed once men, such as George and Lennie, enter the scene.

6 Symbolism An object, an act or an idea that is used to represent something other than itself Key word: symbol; represents Ex: In the play, A Raisin in the Sun, Mama’s plant becomes a symbol of her dream to plant her family’s roots. The plant’s roots represent the family’s roots. With the new house, Mama will be able to take her symbolic plant and place it in the garden that will help her family grow.

7 Irony The use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of what is intended Key word: intended, intention; opposite Ex: In the play, Twelve Angry Men, Juror #3 ironically shouts that he is going to kill Juror 8. His intention was to prove the defendant guilty. However, the opposite occurred and he ended up showing how the defendant may not have meant what he said.

8 Characterization All the way in which a character is revealed – through actions, descriptions, behaviors, dialogue, etc. Key words: traits; characterized Ex: In Twelve Angry Men, none of the jurors have names. Juror #8 is the protagonist and he characterized by his reasonable and fair traits. Juror #3, the antagonist, is characterized as being very angry and stubbornly going against the other jurors.
