Personal Data Previously the information was fairly static –a.k.a. the Day Planner –Calendar, Notes, Contacts, Tasks Timeliness of the data increasing important New data types introduced –Messaging including but not limited to E-Mail, SMS Messaging, Instant Messaging, Audio and Video.

Alignment Devices have improved and address many of the “Not’s” Users pressing for more and better access to data Timeliness of the access is important and ideally in real time Connectivity methods have improved and introduced manageability challenges Faculty/Staff usage versus Student usage

Data Connectivity Not meaning transport but the method Cradle Sync, IR, Bluetooth –Application conduits Synchronization Over the Air (SOTA) –Adds manageability features –Generally Proprietary –Limited choices for third party or standards based options

“We want Exchange!” Do users want to use Exchange or Outlook as a client/ Do they need Exchange to use Blackberry? What about students?

What’s happening at Harvard Medical school implemented Exchange in 2002 Several high profile administrators and faculty demands Life cycle of administrative email and calendaring system –IMAP access improved in handhelds –Meeting Maker limited to cradle sync on limited numbers of devices –Lack of integration

Deploying Exchange to Administration –Project details discussed in the September 2004 CSG meeting 18 month evaluation process Vendor product evaluations –Implementation underway 4000 administrative staff Early adopters spring, Summer deployment –SOTA technology not yet selected Possibility of limiting supported device types? NTP patent dispute with Blackberry Options with Good Technology or Intellisync Native Exchange functionality with Activesync in Exchange 2003 SP2 In-house or open source development not likely
