“Jesus Went Further” Luke 24:13-28 04/16/2006 AM Dr. Dane Boyles

“Jesus Went Further” Introduction 13 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; 16 but they were kept from recognizing him. (Luke 24:13-16)

“Jesus Went Further” 17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?” They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you only a visitor to Jerusalem and do not know the things that have happened there in these days?” (Luke 24:17-18)

“Jesus Went Further” 19 “What things?” he asked. “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. (Luke 24:19-21)

“Jesus Went Further” 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning 23 but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” (Luke 24:22-24)

“Jesus Went Further” 25 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. (Luke 24:25-27)

“Jesus Went Further” 28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. (Luke 24:28-29)

“Jesus Went Further” “He acted as if he were going farther. (Luke 24:28) If it were necessary, Jesus would have done more than He did to purchase our salvation! If necessary, Jesus would have gone further!

“Jesus Went Further” But Calvary was sufficient! The Christ did have to suffer these things. Jesus did have to pay our debt in full! 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. (Col 1:13-14)

“Jesus Went Further” God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son (John 3:16). While we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Rom 5:8). 19 God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ (2 Cor 5:19).

“Jesus Went Further” From the creature came: - undeserved humiliation. -unbearable mockery. - inhumane suffering. - unthinkable torture. - indescribable pain.

“Jesus Went Further” From the Creator came: - immeasurable love. - ultimate unselflessness. - indisputable grace. - incomprehensible mercy. - supreme sacrifice.

“Jesus Went Further” Because there is absolutely no way for the holy, just, and true God to forgive sin and save sinners apart from the sin-atoning death of his own dear Son as our substitute. He’s not in the tomb! Jesus is alive! Jesus didn’t come to this earth just to die on the cross.

“Jesus Went Further” That was just part of his mission. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost. (Luke 19:10

“Jesus Went Further” He appeared to many disciples: To Mary Magdalene (Mk 16:9; Jn 20:14) To other women returning from the tomb (Mt 28:9,10) To the apostles with Thomas absent (Jn 20:19-24) To the apostles with Thomas present (Jn 20:26-29)

“Jesus Went Further” Jesus appeared to his disciples because His work wasn’t done! 7 It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. (John 16:7)

“Jesus Went Further” 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. (John 7:38-39)

“Jesus Went Further” 26 Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” (Luke 24:26)

“Jesus Went Further” Why were these things necessary? That was the only way to the mercy seat! What was required in the OT?  The altar of sacrifice  The sacrificial lamb  The brazen laver of water  The cleansing of the priest before he could enter into the Holy of Holies

“Jesus Went Further” 11 When Christ came as high priest of the good things that are already here, he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not man-made, that is to say, not a part of this creation. (Heb 9:11)

“Jesus Went Further” 12 He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption. (Heb 9:11-12)

“Jesus Went Further” 3 So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. 4 Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the napkin lying there, (John 20:3-6)

“Jesus Went Further” 7 as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus’ head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen. (John 20:7)

“Jesus Went Further” 1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. (Acts 2:1-3)

“Jesus Went Further” 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. (Acts 2:4)

“Jesus Went Further” It wasn’t enough for Him to be buried in a tomb. He was satisfied only when He was resurrected & entered into His glory, so that He could share that glory with you & me! Closing
