Solubility Curves

A solubility curve (see Table G) shows the maximum amount of solute that will normally dissolve in a given amount of a solvent over a range of temperatures

Solubility Curves

When a solvent has dissolved the maximum amount of solute, it is saturated. All points that are on a solubility curve represent a saturated solution. When a solvent can still dissolve more solute, it is unsaturated. All points that are under a solubility curve represent an unsaturated solution.

Solubility Curves 1) Which of the substances on the solubility curve is the least soluble in water at 10 o C? __________ 2) Which of the substances on the solubility curve has the greatest increase in solubility as the temperature increases from 30 o C to 60 o C? __________ 3) Which of the substances on the solubility curve has its solubility affected the least by a change in temperature? __________ KClO 3 KNO 3 NaCl

Solubility Curves 4) At what temperature will the two solutions KNO 3(aq) and NaNO 3(aq), have the same solubility? __________ o C 5) What two substances have the same degree of solubility at approximately 28 o C? __________ and __________ 6) How many grams of potassium chlorate can be added to 350 g of water at 70 o C until the maximum solubility is reached? __________ g ≈ 71 NH 3 KNO 3 ≈ 126 - 130

Solubility Curves 7) Which substance on the solubility curve is the most soluble at 20 o C? __________ 8) Why do the solubilities of HCl, NH 3, and SO 2 on the solubility curve decrease with an increase in temperature whereas the solubilities of all the other substances on Table G increase with an increase in temperature? _________________________________________ _________________________________________ 100 o C. The solubility of a gas decreases as the HCl, NH 3, & SO 2 are all gases between 0 o C and solvent’s temperature increases KI
