2 SCENE I

3 Banquo and his son, Fleance, are up and about in the middle of the night. They meet Macbeth, and Banquo delivers gifts from Duncan, including a rich diamond for Lady Macbeth. Banquo reminds Macbeth about the three witches, but Macbeth pretends that he hasn’t thought about them. Dagger Speech - Mental disturbance Goes forward with plan to kill Duncan PLOT

5 How is Banquo’s conversation with Macbeth an example of dramatic irony? When Banquo mentions he dreamt of the witches, why does Macbeth hurriedly say he ‘thinks not of them’? Is this true? What does Macbeth imagine he sees? Why does he see it? What does it represent? THOUGHT QUESTIONS

7 Lady Macbeth has done her job She is anxiously awaiting Macbeth Starts hearing things Macbeth enters feeling very shaken Feels he has murdered sleep (Meaning?) Lady Macbeth is angry he brought the daggers with him Goes back to place them herself Begin to hear knocking so they go to bed. PLOT

9 Lady Macbeth says, “My hands are of your color, but I shame to wear a heart so white.” What does this line mean? “One cried ‘God bless us!’, and ‘Amen’ the other As they had seen me with these hangman’s hands. Listening their fear, I could not say ‘Amen’, When they did say ‘God bless us!’” Why could Macbeth not say “Amen”? QUOTES AND QUESTIONS

10 SCENE III

11 Porter introduced for comic relief Pretends he is guarding the gates of hell (symbolic)? Introduces “guests”: A farmer who killed himself because his crops failed, A smooth talker who lied all through life, but couldn’t talk his way into Heaven, and a tailor who rips off his clients. Macduff and Lennox are at the door. Macduff finds Duncan’s dead body PLOT

12 Macbeth says that he killed the guards out of passion against their crime. No one’s buying it… Malcolm and Donalbain flee Malcolm to England and Donalbain to Ireland PLOT (CONT.)

14 Donalbain says something interesting. “ There’s daggers in men’s smiles. The near in blood, the nearer the bloody.” What do we think this means? THOUGHT QUESTIONS

16 Ross is walking with an old man Discuss strange things that have happened Macduff enters and says both sons have left=looks suspicious Announces Macbeth has been named king This scene serves as a link to connect what has gone before with the next act*** PLOT
