Roanoke England’s first attempt at colonization was not very successful 1584 England- Sir Walter Raleigh was given permission to establish a colony on Roanoke Island in present day South Carolina. John White led the expedition. He left after awhile for supplies. When he returned the colony was gone.

Second Try Jamestown Desperate to have a “New World” settlement, England tried again. This time through the Virginia Company which was a joint-stock company. Entered through the Chesapeake Bay and settled Jamestown.

Jamestown Cont. Captain John Smith was governor.
John Rolfe was also a part this colony and received help from Pocahontas.
