Chesapeake Bay Aquatic Organism Project Introduction to Maritime Science 1 Week Project 3 days introduction and in class research 2 days presentations

Why do we love the Bay? How many species of plants and animals live in the bay? – REMEMBER-2,700 different species! What is the biggest estuary in the U.S? – Chesapeake Bay! 6 Your Project You must choose one organism from each of the following categories: 1.Fish (fin or shellfish) 2.Waterfowl 3.Bay Grasses – For each organism you must include: 1.What does it look like 2.Picture of the organism 3.What activities endanger this organism? 4.Share at least 1 interesting fact about the organism

STEP 1-RESEARCH! Use the Following Sites to Choose Your Organism http://www.chesapeakebay.net/fieldguide/cat egories/category/fish http://www.chesapeakebay.net/fieldguide/cat egories/category/fish http://www.dnr.state.md.us/bay/cblife/ http://www.chesbay.org/forageFish/menhade n.asp http://www.chesbay.org/forageFish/menhade n.asp

STEP 2: NARROW YOUR RESEARCH You must choose one organism from each of the following categories: Fish (fin or shellfish) ____________________________________ Waterfowl ____________________________________ Bay Grasses ____________________________________

For each organism you must include: What does it look like Picture of the organism What activities endanger this organism? Share at least 1 interesting fact about the organism

STEP 3: DESIGN A POWER POINT PRESENTATION TO EDUCATE OTHERS ABOUT YOUR CHOSEN AQUATIC ORGANISMS. You will be expected to: Practice taking notes and paraphrasing new information from the provided websites. Prepare a thorough (but not more than 3 minute) presentation. Present on your 3 organisms in front of the class. Include a “bibliography” to reference your information. Create a slide that has 2 quiz questions that will go at the close of your presentation. Turn in your power point for grading. Turn in your research notes with your presentation.

TIMELINE and GRADING: 6 Days Total (today is the introduction and start up) Your will have 3 working days in class. You will have 2 days to present. During presentations students will be expected to take notes. There will be a quiz following the close of the presentations. Your grade will be calculated from your effort on working days, respect during presentations, your presentation and notes and your average quiz score. Extra credit will be awarded for poems, pictures, raps etc that are created and performed in addition to the power point.
