Alliteration The repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words Christmas Picking pretty presents playing with pretty nice people Christmas cookies hot out of the oven caring about crazy things the Christmas trees taller than ever telling tall tales baking bunches and bunches of treats bring billions of presents

Assonance The repetition of vowel sounds within a line of poetry Moses supposes his toeses are roses, but Moses supposes erroneously; for nobody's toeses are poses of roses, as Moses supposes his toeses to be.

Hyperbole A type of figurative language in which great exaggeration is used for emphasis or humorous effect Hyperbole of My Dog by Autumn Jones Little Girl is my dog. She sleeps like a log. She has a huge mouth, And eats like a hog In her excitement Her tail is a whip times ten. When she sees food Hers eyes start to spin

Imagery Descriptive language that appeals to the senses– sight, sound, touch, taste, or smell. Winter Whispers by Mary O. Fumento The wind whispers when it is cold Trees are white and windows frosted A hush covers all Peaceful, silent Winter whispers as snowflakes drift

Metaphor Compares seemingly unlike things, but does not use the words like or as. The Sickness When the weight of the snow Is taken by the sun The grass springs skyward With the simple force of life I am the grass When the weight of myself Is melted away By the truth of the moment. But I catch myself Always catch myself Become myself once more To write such words as these.
