WHAT ARE THE CIVIL WAR AMENDMENTS? 13 th amendment Outlawed slavery and freed thousands of enslaved African Americans 14 th amendment Defined American citizenship (born OR naturalized in U.S.; included most African Americans) Required all states to give ALL citizens equal protections under the law and due process of the law Can’t just toss people in jail and throw away the key 15 th amendment No state may deny the right to vote based on race Race NOT gender!!!

5. WHY WAS THE 24 TH AMENDMENT NECESSARY, EVEN AFTER THE CIVIL WAR AMENDMENTS? Although the 15 th amendment gave African American men the right to vote, southern states found other ways to block them from voting. Many southern states required a poll tax This was a fee required to vote Many African Americans could not afford to pay the tax (some poor whites could not afford either) The 24 th amendment, passed in 1964, made poll taxes illegal
