VO JointCall 2 6 th May 04 1 IST Priority - National Contact Point meeting Brussels, 6 th May 2004 2nd Joint Call IST/NMP Evangelos OUZOUNIS European Commission – DG Information Society Directorate C

VO JointCall 2 6 th May 04 2 Presentation outline Why a joint call? What is under the 2nd joint call? Nanoelectronics, nanophotonics Biosensors Manufacturing Conclusions – on joint call IMS - Intelligent Manufacturing Systems

VO JointCall 2 6 th May 04 3 Why a Joint Call?  Synergies –Areas of relevance to both, IST & NMP –Bundle resources for inter-disciplinary R&D, avoid gaps, overlaps, duplications of effort –Joint Call involves several IST and NMP units in common domains –Need to fulfil int’l commitments (e.g. launch IMS projects)  In particular in the 2nd Joint Call –Three areas of complementarity between IST & NMP (nano-, biosensors, manufacturing/IMS) –Joint Call areas identified in IST and NMP WP2004 A tradition... –Continuation of good collaboration between IST & GROWTH programmes of FP5 (IMS) –Both IST and NMP value the importance of ICTs in developing further and maintaining a “knowledge-driven industrial base” for Europe

VO JointCall 2 6 th May 04 4 Joint Call - Area 3 R&D focus: –Nano-electronic and nano-photonic/optical materials (e.g. compound semiconductors, functional polymer and glass materials) and related fabrication processes –Integrated non-conventional nano-MOS logic and memory devices, photonics/nano-electronics integration technologies for functional devices, and related production technologies –Materials, processes and equipment for very advanced nano- structuring and nano-patterning technologies required for the high volume production of nano-electronic and nano-photonic integrated circuits Funding: 60 M€ Instruments: IP, STREP (radical innovation), SSA Materials, equipment & processes for production of nano-photonics & nano-electronics devices Objective To master nanoelectronics & nanophotonics for low-cost mass production

VO JointCall 2 6 th May 04 5 Joint Call - Area 2 R&D focus: Development of technological platforms, taking into account all aspects of the life cycle of biomedical sensors and health monitoring systems Radical improvement of sensitivity, accuracy, precision, stability, selectivity, reproducibility, reliability, cost and where necessary sterilisation and bio-compatibility Integration activities aiming at increasing molecular (MR) and cellular recognition (CR) capabilities Activities addressing health issues in a holistic manner using and/or including the development of bio-sensor-based integrated systems Funding: 60 M€ Instruments: IP, STREP (radical innovation), SSA Bio-sensors for Diagnosis & Healthcare Objective Integration of bio-sensors & smart/hybrid materials for innovative bio-medical sensing & intelligent diagnosis

VO JointCall 2 6 th May 04 6 Joint Call - Area 1 R&D focus: –Advanced control and networking of embedded systems for dynamic reconfiguration of complex manufacturing processes –Multidisciplinary and dynamic work environments facilitating multi-stakeholder involvement and life cycle management of manufacturing systems, products and services –Innovative approaches to customisation fulfilment, logistics and maintenance via mobile miniature and wireless devices or smart tags Funding: 60 M€ Instruments: IP, STREP (radical innovation, international cooperation, IMS), SSA Integrating Technologies for Fast & Flexible Manufacturing IST Strategic Objective: “Products & Services Engineering 2010” int’l R&D collaboration (IMS) Objective To support European leadership in engineering & manufacturing

VO JointCall 2 6 th May 04 7 Joint Call: other details Call identifier: FP6-2004-IST-NMP-2 Publication: beginning of June 2004 Deadline: 14 October 2004 at 17h00 Submission in a single stage (+ hearings for IP) See all relevant call documents, when published, in: http://fp6.cordis.lu/fp6/calls_open.cfm

VO JointCall 2 6 th May 04 8 Joint Call: Conclusions  The rationale for the Joint Call is manifold: –an opportunity to create synergies within FP6 –at the initiative of IST and NMP priorities in FP6 (WP2004) –a need to launch international activities  New focus areas (2 and 3): –nano-electronics & nano-photonics –bio-sensors for diagnosis and healthcare Manufacturing area: –need to put emphasis on IMS-relevant projects (mainly STREPs – or IP) –need to support ICT competence in manufacturing
