8.3 Properties of Acids and Bases Acid- a compound that produces hydronium ions (H3O) when dissolved in water. Examples: vinegar, carbonated drinks, stomach juices, fertilizers, car batteries
2
Properties of Acids Sour Taste – citrus fruits Reactivity with metals – Lab Color Changes in Indicators – blue litmus paper turns red.
3
Properties of Bases Base – compound that produces hydroxide ions (OH) when dissolved in water. Examples- deodorants, antacids, concrete, plaster, laxative, drain cleaners, soap
4
Properties of Bases Bitters Taste –unsweetened chocolate, cough syrup Slippery Feel – soap, cleaning products, wet rocks Color Changes in Indicators – red litmus paper turns blue
5
Neutralization Reaction between an acid and a base produces a salt and water.
6
8.4 Strength of Acids and Bases pH Scale – a number scale from 0 to 14 to describe the concentration of Hydronium ions in a solution
7
Lower the pH-more acidic Higher the pH-more basic
