Importance of working with media Can’t afford not to Power to change the world We need the media because we have a message to put out Media have a role to play in the fight against HIV

What to do when approached to do media work? Think carefully about what you are you are being asked to do Get some advice and support Don’t be afraid to say ‘NO’. To engage the media or not is entirely your decision

Who is your audience – affected by, affecting something, influential, general awareness Write down 2 to 3 Key messages – long or shot term messages; changing messages; pro-active; re-active Stick to what you want to say, don’t get sidetracked Remember nothing is off the record You are likely not to be the only source for the story Journalists tend to work on a story by story basis Preparing

Answering difficult questions If you do not know the answer say so, do not speculate Do not get angry, keep calm & a conversational tone Don’t always answer the question
