COMMUNICATING WITH OTHERS Ch. 3

What is communication? The act in which one person sends a message to another person and receives a response. 2 people must be involved: sender & receiver A message is the result of good communication. Feedback lets the sender know the message is understood.

Verbal & Nonverbal Communication Verbal communication is using words, either spoken or written! Nonverbal communication is using sounds, gestures, and facial expressions. What message comes this kind of facial expression ? Tone of voice is very important when using verbal communication!

You must have your listening ears on! Hearing & Listening are two different things. The communication process is not complete until the receiver gives the sender some feedback. Communication is constant! We live in a noisy world. How can you tell if someone is really listening? Listening is not always easy…it takes concentration. Look on page 40 for tips on how to be a good listener.

Dealing with Disagreements Communication is sometimes difficult. If you face a disagreement with someone try to follow these rules: Try to understand the other person’s feelings. Talk about your needs and feelings. Know when to stop talking. Stick to the issue at hand. Use “I” messages.

Meeting New People If you approach a stranger first, you will feel more comfortable. To remember names, concentrate on the name and try to repeat it to yourself several times during the conversation. Offer a compliment to get a conversation started. Use friendly body language. Be sure to ask questions when the person has finished talking.

Communication and Leadership Skills Good communication skills are very important for developing leadership skills. Leaders are motivators and influential people. A good leader should be able to help solve problems. Communication is the key to making and keeping friends!
