Ratification In America, the Senate must ratify any treaty for it to be legal 1918 – Democrats (Wilson’s political party) lose the mid-term elections Why would the US object to signing the treaty? Article 10 – Collective Security - Nations must help and supply troops to keep peace How does this picture explain the US objections to Collective security?

Debating the Treaty of Versailles We are going to divide the class into 2 groups in America and debate whether to sign the Treaty of Versailles Your job is to prepare arguments for your points Internationalist – senators who support ratification Irreconcilables – senators who want to reject the Treaty of Versailles

What is a strong debate? One that uses facts with clear explanations!!!!! Ex. Canada is better than Italy ▫Canada makes better pizza ▫Canada is bigger ▫Canada has a lower unemployment rate. For example, unemployment in Italy is 12% (July 2015) while Canada’s is 6.5% (July 2014). ▫Therefore, there are more jobs in Canada than Italy meaning that people have a better chance of finding a job and earning enough money to support a family. What’s wrong?

Canada is better than Italy Have a mini debate with your partner using this method (each person speaks at least 2 times) ▫Ex. Genoa is better than Sampadoria ▫Iphone is better than all other phones ▫Ronaldo is better looking than Mr. McCarey Canada has a lower unemployment rate.
