4 community ) challenge ) excellence ) inspiration ) leadership Observation versus Evaluation Classroom Observation – a formative process of gathering data around teacher learning targets to provide feedback to the teacher regarding growth and to inform future teacher learning(ITPDP, PLC Team Goal) Evaluation – a summative process of determining whether a teacher meets the Iowa Teaching Standards

Observation informs our leadership practice – allows us to more clearly diagnose needs and provide teachers support Feedback provided to teachers spurs self- assessment and reflection Data and evidence provide focus for continued teacher learning and differentiation for teacher learning (ITPDP) Coaching and constant, gentle pressure to change practices occurs through reflective questions Indicates priority of core work and models effective teaching practice

Target ITPDP goal areas 4-6 times per year (prioritize new teachers) Must provide descriptive feedback and reflective question for teacher to consider Connect the feedback to teacher learning targets Time spent with PLCs as they collaborate also provides evidence of learning Building a culture of observation that extends to peers provides more feedback for teachers

7 community ) challenge ) excellence ) inspiration ) leadership How Do You Maximize Classroom Observation Opportunities? Block time on your calendar weekly and make it sacred Communicate the importance of this time with all staff – secretary, teachers, APs Invest time in providing descriptive feedback and reflective questions for teachers (master teachers crave it and new and struggling teachers need it) Build capacity in others around you to manage the operations
