DNA 12-1
2
Griffith’s Experiment Involved injecting mice with various strains of bacteria (pneumonia causing and non pneumonia causing strains) Led the way for Oswald Avery to determine DNA was responsible for transformation – Made two extracts from heat treated bacteria (one with enzymes that destroys proteins, lipids, carbs and one with enzymes that destroy DNA)
4
Hershey-Chase Experiment Determined which part of a virus is the cause of illness Treated viruses with radioactive chemicals (sulfur/phosphorous) to follow along Showed that viral DNA inserted into host cells
5
Components of DNA Made up of molecules called nucleotides – Adenine – Thymine – Guanine – Cytosine Nucleotides can be joined together in any order (any number of combinations are possible) Combinations of nucleotides creates DNA found in every living thing
6
The Double Helix Watson and Crick – Discovered the double helix shape of DNA in 1953 Base pairing – The concept that hydrogen bonding exists between certain nucleotides (adenine to thymine, guanine to cytosine)
7
Activity Draw a molecule of DNA Show the base pairing that exists in DNA Write a one paragraph summary that details the important information from the notes Compare your summary with someone else in the class.
