Reflection and Symmetry If you draw an imaginary line down the center of whatever you're looking at, both sides would be a mirror image of each other. This would also show symmetry Try these activities on symmetry Math: Symmetry Math: Symmetry

Reflection You can FLIP a shape and show it’s reflection. Make a shape. Highlight the shape. Click ‘Draw’. Choose FLIP. Your shape will FLIP and you will see its reflection. Try here for lots of activities with shapes BBC Schools Online - MegaShapes - HomepageBBC Schools Online - MegaShapes - Homepage

Sorting Shapes My sorting rule is: Shapes with curves and shapes without curves. CURVES NO CURVES If you want to get some shapes to work with, click here Basic Shape PatternsBasic Shape Patterns

Patterns This is a 2-D Pattern: What would be next? This is a 3-D Pattern What would be next? Make your own pattern block shape ON LINE! Pattern Blocks: Exploring Fractions with Shapes Pattern Blocks: Exploring Fractions with Shapes

Parallel Lines The lines of the skis are parallel The lines of the oars are not The legs of the tables are parallel The sides of the hanger are not The edges of the paper are parallel The edges of the paper airplane are not

Right Angles Right angles are square corners This is a right angle No matter which way you look at it, it is still a right angle This is a right angle

Parallelogram A parallelogram has parallel sides Try some Tangrams! http://www.tangrams.ca/ http://www.tangrams.ca/

Prisms A prism can be named by its base A prism with a triangular base would be called a triangular prism A prism with a square base would be called a square prism A prism with a rectangular base would be called a rectangular prism Do you need help with shapes? Go here: Geometry Main Page Geometry Main Page

Polygons A closed figure with 3 or more line segments is a polygon These are polygons These are not polygons Can you name these shapes? Test yourself! Click here

Faces and Surfaces Some 3-D shapes have flat surfaces called FACES Some 3-D shapes have curved surfaces called SURFACES

Nets Nets are 2-D plans with which to make 3-D shapes. Here is a net that will make a cube. If you cut it out and fold it up, you will have a cube Try some nets! NetsNets Get to know shapes: http://illuminations.nctm.org/imath/3- 5/GeometricSolids/GeoSolids5.html http://illuminations.nctm.org/imath/3- 5/GeometricSolids/GeoSolids5.html
