What was Reconstruction? Reconstruction lasted from 1865-1877. Reconstruction was the nation’s attempt to reunite the country and rebuild the South.

What were the “Civil War Amendments”? 13 th Amendment- Ended Slavery. 14 th Amendment- Gave all people born in America citizenship. 15 th Amendment- Gave African- American Men the right to vote.

Who were the “Radical Republicans”? Believed blacks deserved the same political rights and opportunities as whites. Also, believed that the Confederate leaders should be punished for their roles in the Civil War.

Who was Hiram Revels? Mississippi educator and minister who became the first African American to serve in the U.S. Senate.

Who were the Ku Klux Klan? Racist, terrorist organization that formed in Tennessee in1866 to terrorize minorities and Republicans.

How did Southerners Feel About Reconstruction? Most Southerners rebelled against reconstruction. Southern Unionists were insulted as scalawags. Northerners who came to the South were insulted as Carpetbaggers.

What was the Freedmen’s Bureau? The Government agency tried to improve the lives of recently freed slaves. The Freedmen’s Bureau had little money and support and worked under constant threats and intimidation.

Race Relations During Reconstruction Black Codes or racist laws known as Jim Crow laws were created. Sharecropping replaced slavery, but kept African-Americans poor. Poll-Taxes and Literacy kept African- Americans from voting. African-Americans were victims or organized violence.

What was the Homestead Act? Passed in 1862. Opened the west for farmers as long as they were willing to live in the land.

What was the Dawes Act? Passed in 1867. Turned communal (group) land into individual land for Indians. The law hurt Native Americans.

What was the Morrill Act? Profits from land sells create State Universities.

How did Reconstruction End? Northerners lost interest in the South. Northern troops left the South as part of a compromise over the election of 1876. Republicans win the Presidency and Democrats end Reconstruction.

Did Reconstruction Work? Yes, the country was reunited. Yes, the Southern economy was rebuilt. No, African- Americans still suffered from racism and violence.
