2 Popular Sovereignty ■People are the source of the government’s power.

3 Republicanism ■People elect their political representatives.

4 Limited Government ■The Constitution limits the actions of the government by specifically listing power it does and does not have.

5 Federalism ■In this government System, power is divided between the national and state governments.

6 Separation of Powers ■Each of the three branches of government has its own responsibilities.

7 Checks and balances ■Each branch of government holds some control over the other two branches.

8 Individual Rights ■Basic liberties and rights of all citizens are guaranteed in the Bill of Rights.
