Good Morning S3! In today’s lesson, we will… Learn about DICTION. Learn about CONNOTATIONS. Practice descriptive writing.

Diction Diction means the choice and use of words in speech or writing. DENOTATION – look up a definition in your dictionary. CONNOTATION – look up a definition in your dictionary.

Diction DENOTATION is the dictionary definition of a word. CONNOTATION is the meaning or idea that is associated with the word. The emotional or cultural meaning associated with the word. Connotations can be positive or negative. For example: skinny, slim, thin.

Diction For example: home, house, dwelling, residence. What is the denotation of the above words? What are the connotations? Home (cosy, warm, comfortable, loving) House (the actual building or structure) Dwelling (primitive and basic) Residence (cold, no feeling)

Connotations REDBLUEBLACKYELLOWGREEN Think of the connotations of the above colours. Try to get one positive connotation and one negative.

Connotations Your topic is SCHOOL. Write a description of school that has negative/positive connotations. Include colour, adjectives and appeal to senses. Swap your paragraph with a partner. Note down 5 examples of word choice and explain the connotations.
