2 Christmas Eve-Setting the Table Preparations for Christmas Eve we take all day. On Christmas Eve the house must be thoroughly cleaned, all the bed linens changed and all family members must bathe and dress clean clothes before the evening meal. During the Christmas Eve people do not eat meat. Only small children, the infirm or very old persons were allowed to eat meat. Food make of fish and herring. For the Christmas Eve dinner, the table is prepared very thoroughly. Dishes and cutlery must be clean. The table is then covered with a pure white tablecloth, set with plates and decorated with candles and fir boughs. After the tablecloth is laid hay, it is a reminder that Jesus was born in a stable and laid in a manger on hay and in the table centre put a cross. A small plate with as many Christmas wafers as there are persons present is placed in the center of the table. By Christmas Eve must by pap and Christmas Eve cookies (kūčiukai). During the Christmas Eve the oldest person in the family say prayer. Dishes (patiekalų) on the table can be 9 or 12, because this numbers is magical. Christmas Eve - last night in the advent and this dinner must to spend quietly.
