Good Morning! Monday, 12/7 As you come in: Take out a blank piece of paper and begin brainstorming what your data table is going to look like. It must include these items: 1.Title (includes MV & RV) 2.Labels for rows (MV) & columns (RV) 3.Multiple pieces of data 4.Units on data 5.Observations section
2
DATA TABLE DATA TABLE EXAMPLES:
3
Create your data table on a blank piece of paper. Everyone in your group needs to have their own data table! Staple your data table to your lab set up (salmon sheet). Collect your data & make observations.
4
How does water flow through a plant? Transpiration Lab
5
PLANT ANATOMY (plant structure) Shoot system Above ground Root system Under ground
6
PLANT ANATOMY Root system (label) PURPOSE Anchors the plant in the soil Absorbs water & nutrients Conducts water & nutrients Food storage
7
Shoot system (label) PURPOSE Elevates the plant above the ground Conducts food & water Photosynthesis Reproduction & dispersal PLANT ANATOMY
8
PLANT TISSUES Every part of a plant is made up of 3 different types of tissue: 1. Dermal Tissue (label) Protection Epi dermis = skin 2. Ground Tissue (label) Synthesis of sugars Storage Support 3. Vascular Tissue (label) Transport (like veins transport blood) Support
9
Absorb water & nutrients Root Hairs (label) Tubular extensions Increases surface area of root Aids in water & nutrient absorption ROOTS (dermal tissue)
10
ROOTS (ground tissue) Cortex provides support and stores starch & sugars epidermis cortex vascular Hey! I yam what I yam, man! You’re not a yam, you’re a sweetpotato!
11
STEMS (label) Usually above ground Supports leaves and fruits Conducts water and nutrients throughout the plant epidermis pith cortex Vascular bundles
12
STEM types Herbaceous vs. Woody stems
13
STEM (vascular tissue) Phloem transports sugar Xylem: tiny tubes that act like straws to transport water and minerals
14
WOODY STEM Annual rings : xylem formed during one growing season One ring = one year
15
History of the tree: annual rings 1489: Tree is planted by Native American 1492: Columbus lands in the Americas 1620: Pilgrims land in Plymouth, Mass. 1776: Declaration of US independence 1861: Start of Civil War 1969: Man lands on Moon 1917 & 1945: Tree Survives two World Wars 1971: Birth Year of the IDIOT who cut down this tree!!! Dendrochronology : tree time-keeping
16
How water & minerals moves from the ground to the top of a plant Plants loose water out of their leaves Which pulls water up from the stem Which pulls water up from the roots Which absorbs water from the ground TRANSPIRATION (label)
