Rich soil combined with ample rainfall make much of the South an excellent place for growing crops. Agriculture has always been and still is a very important part of the South's economy.
The recent shift from an agriculture-based economy to an industry-based economy has made the transportation and tourism industries major components of the region's economy.

Once a region of family farms, new technology and an economic recession caused many small farms to go out of business. The loss of so many farm jobs sent many people to urban areas such as Chicago, Detroit, and St. Louis to find employment
