1 Science and Creationism 18. Fish © Colin Frayn, 2008-2011 www.frayn.net

2 © Colin Frayn, 2008-2011 www.frayn.net Fish Adapting to Salination Q: Can freshwater fish survive in salt water? –And vice versa? A: Sometimes Some fish are able to adapt, e.g. salmon Some cannot –Saltwater fish are adapted to high salination –When they are placed in fresh water, they absorb far too much water This is fatal, even if it happens gradually If the flood heavily diluted the seas –Most of the fish would die

3 © Colin Frayn, 2008-2011 www.frayn.net Marine Animals Massive amounts of fresh water –Dilutes the salinity of the oceans –Kills the saltwater fishes Increased water depth –Blocks off light from the corals –Most corals contain photosynthetic algae called zooxanthellae –Without light, they die –If they die, the corals die

4 © Colin Frayn, 2008-2011 www.frayn.net Whales Whales are mammals –They need to breathe air –Why? –Because they evolved from land mammals Surely the best design would be to give all marine creatures gills? Why are there marine mammals?
