July 28, 2010IETF 78 – Maastricht, Netherlands1 IP Multicast Performance Monitoring: update on IPPM experience Vero Zheng Alberto Tempia Bonda

MBONED WGMulticast performance monitoring drafts2 Background Requirements for IP Multicast Performance Monitoring draft-bipi-mboned-ip-multicast-pm-requirement-01 Functional requirements Topology discovery Performance measurements Measurement session management Measurement Result Reporting Design considerations Real traffic measurements Scalability Robustness Security Device flexibility Extensibility

MBONED WGMulticast performance monitoring drafts3 Background There are also two solution drafts draft-liu-mboned-multicast-realstream-monitor-02 draft-cociglio-mboned-multicast-pm-00 At IETF 77 it was commented that requirements are not only specific to multicast traffic It was suggested to present the work also in other WGs

MBONED WGMulticast performance monitoring drafts4 Which WG for this work? BM WG - Benchmarking Methodology It focuses on lab environment measurements “the scope of the BMWG is limited to technology characterization using simulated stimuli in a laboratory environment. Said differently, the BMWG does not attempt to produce benchmarks for live, operational networks” IPPM - IP Performance Metrics See next slide… Others?

MBONED WGMulticast performance monitoring drafts5 IPPM WG feedback We presented the requirement draft in IPPM on Monday “The metrics developed by the WG were developed inside an active measurement context, that is, the devices used to measure the metrics produce their own traffic. However, most metrics can be used inside a passive context as well. No work is planned is this area though, this may be changed with AD approval” Not much interest on passive performance monitoring Lars Eggert commented that to generalize passive measurements is very hard since its application specific There will be a poll on IPPM mailing list

MBONED WGMulticast performance monitoring drafts6 How to proceed? Is Mboned an appropriate place for this work? We think Mboned is the right WG WG opinion?
