1 Salt Dough Recipe 2 cups of Plain Flour 1 cup of table salt 1 cup of water Method 1. Mix the flour and the salt together and then stir in the water. 2. Knead the dough together - adding small drops of extra water if necessary to make a smooth dough. 3. Turn the dough onto a clear surface and continue to knead it for about 10 minutes - by which time the dough should be warm, soft and pliable. If possible it is best to let the dough stand for approximately 20 minutes before beginning a project. 4. Drying can either be done naturally in the open air, or it can be baked in an oven. However it is not recommended that you have your oven hotter than 200F as this can cause unsightly bubbles and cracks in your pastry. The drying time needed for each piece varies according to size and thickness, but an average time for natural drying is 30-48 hours, while oven times are generally reduced to 3-4 hours. The Hawaiian studies project for the first marking period is a salt dough, 3D map of Oahu. Follow the steps below to create, paint and label your O‘ahu map. Good luck and enjoy learning about the amazing island of O‘ahu! 1.Use the salt dough recipe on the right to create a batch of dough for your project. (You might need more than 1 batch to form your mountain areas.) 2.Lay the O‘ahu island template inside your cardboard soda flat. Start spreading your dough to cover the island of Oahu. Use maps to create low and high areas to match the topography of the island. (See map websites below.) 3.After you have built your island, cut out the triangle flags and glue or tape them to toothpicks. Poke the toothpicks into the dough to show the location of each historical or geographic place. 4.Wait for the dough to dry completely (1 or 2 days), then paint your 3D map. Paint the ocean. Use yellows and browns for the mountains and green for the land at sea level. 5.Helpful images can be found at http://gohawaii.about.com/od/oahumaps/l/bloahu_clickable_m ap_001.htm http://1800sunstar.com/zhawaii-maps/oahu-hawaii-map.html or google “Oahu map”
