Genres in Literature There are many different kinds of books that we can and will be reading. The word genre, means a category or a type of a story.

All categories of books or stories can be called either fiction or non-fiction.
a made up story can tell about things that could happen is read for fun characters may be like real people or imaginary Non-Fiction has facts that can be checked and proven the author is an expert on this information it is about real people, places and things it IS TRUE!

Here are some different types of books: *Alphabet books * how to books *animal books * coloring books *arts and craft books * folktales *fantasy * mystery *poetry * biographies

Fantasy, Fairy Tales, Folktales Poetry Informational (Non-Fiction)
Some of the different types of books you will find in our class library are: Fiction Realistic Fiction Fantasy, Fairy Tales, Folktales Poetry Informational (Non-Fiction)

Fiction Books tells about things that could never happen in real life
a made-up story is read for fun characters can include talking animals, made up monsters, people with made up characteristics. Genres

Realistic fiction can be based on a real story
characters act like real people character try to solve a problem story that could happen in real life some events are historically accurate character’s feelings and behaviors are like real life Genres

Fantasy (Fairy Tales & Folk Tales)
animal characters may act like people characters may have special powers characters may be imaginary usually has a good vs. bad conflict setting may take place at another time Genres

Poetry page format may look different than other books
may have rhythm (beat) may rhyme imaginative and creative uses describing or exciting words tells a story in verse (like a song) Genres

Informational Non-Fiction
Tells facts that can be looked-up or proven tells about real events characters have really lived may have maps, diagrams and illustrations to explain the facts author is an expert on the subject Genres
