Word Families What is a Word Family? A Word Family is a set of words that have the same letter pattern at the end. For example, the series of words "cat, hat, mat, rat" are all members of the same word family. What are Some Common Word Families? According to researchers Richard E. Wylie and Donald D. Durrell, there are 37 commonly used word families. They are as follows: ~ ab ~ ack ~ ad ~ ag ~ ail ~ ain ~ ake ~ ap ~ ar ~ ash ~ at ~ ate ~ aw ~ ay ~ ale ~ all ~ am ~ ame ~ an ~ and ~ ank ~ ick ~ ide ~ ig ~ ight ~ ill ~ in ~ ine ~ eat ~ ed< ~ ell ~ en ~ est ~ et ~ ice ~ ing ~ ink ~ ip ~ it ~ ock ~ og ~ oke ~ old ~ op ~ ore ~ ot< ~ uck ~ ug ~ um ~ ump ~ unk

A handful of words Write down the word “make” on the wrist. Write all the words you can think of in the word family –ake. -share with a partner -share with the class

-ain Slap thighs 3 times after the first word. Clap hands 3 times after the second word. So on.
